Breaking Free from "Stuckness"

Ever felt stuck facing a challenge, like you're hitting a wall you can't get around? That feeling often comes down to your perspective – the unique lens coloring how you see the situation. This viewpoint powerfully shapes not just how you feel, but the actions you believe are possible.

This post will delve into what perspective truly means in the context of personal growth and achieving goals. We'll explore why looking at situations from different angles is vital for breaking free when you feel stuck. Ultimately, you'll see how consciously choosing your perspective is a key source of empowerment.

What is Perspective?

So, what do we mean by "perspective" in coaching? It's the way we look at things, which genuinely makes a difference. Perspective is essentially your viewpoint, attitude, or mindset regarding a specific topic or situation. Often, when facing a challenge, we focus heavily on the external situation or circumstances, for instance you are having some collaboration issue with your colleagues.

Exploring Perspectives

A key step in coaching is to gently untangle the neutral topic (the relationship itself) from the perspective you're holding about it ("I'm dreading it," or "It's overwhelming"). While the circumstances of the event might be the same regardless, the perspective you choose to hold will drastically shape your actual experience of it.

The next step in coaching to is exploring different perspectives. The goal isn't necessarily to find the one "right" or "better" way to see things; instead, the aim is to help you regain flexibility, adaptability, creativity, and resourcefulness in how you approach your situation.

In coaching, we might be using techniques, such as looking at a situation through a metaphor, noticing the physical sensations or "embodiment" connected to a viewpoint, or asking powerful, curiosity-driven questions. By trying on different ways of seeing, we interrupt habitual patterns and open ourselves up to greater choice and fresh possibilities.

Your Empowered Choice

After you've taken the time to explore and understand the various perspectives of your topic, the next step involves making a conscious and deliberate choice about the viewpoint you want to adopt moving forward. This isn't simply about selecting any available option; it's about making an Empowered Choice that aligns with your deeper self. When you make the empowered choice, try asking yourself:

  • Does this perspective resonate with my core values?

  • Does it support my overall goals and purpose?

  • Does it reflect the wisdom and guidance of my inner voice?

By aligning your chosen perspective with your inner compass, you can make choices that are not only empowering but also authentic and fulfilling.
