Checking the Map: The Mid-Term Pause
Imagine you're on a long, exciting road trip. Halfway through, wouldn't you pull over to check the map, see how far you've come, and make sure your destination is still where you want to go?
This is exactly what we do in our coaching relationship. I call it the mid-term check-in—a deliberate pause to take what we call a "balcony view" of our journey so far.
It's a powerful opportunity for us to pause, reflect, and consciously "co-create" what the next phase of our work will look like. This ensures the coaching stays alive, relevant, and focused on what matters most to you.
Why This Pause is So Powerful
A coaching journey is always about you. This check-in is no different. It’s a session designed to honor your progress, check the relevance of your goals, and give you space to think about what's next.
It's Your Session, Always: We start by grounding the session in your present needs. The most important question is always, "Given that this is our check-in, what is the most important thing for you to explore or accomplish in our time together today?".
It Honors Your Progress: It’s so easy to be focused on the next step and forget how far we've come. We make dedicated space to celebrate your accomplishments. I'll ask, "What are you most proud of accomplishing so far?".
It Re-Connects You to Your "Why": This pause also helps us re-connect to your 'why.' We pull forward the powerful goals you set in our very first session , and then we check in with a crucial question: "How do those goals resonate with you today?". People change, and your goals should be able to change, too.
Our three-part process
1. Looking Back (Honoring the Journey)
First, we look back to honor the journey. This isn't just a summary; it's an exploration of your biggest "aha" moments.
We’ll reflect on what stands out to you when you look back at our past five sessions, and what's been the most significant moment or learning for you.
We also revisit the powerful inner tools and metaphors we’ve discovered, like your "Leader Within."
2. Checking In (Assessing the Present)
Next, we get real about what's happening right now. This is where we look at the landscape of your life and career as it is today.
We'll explore, "What is the biggest challenge or 'stuck' point present for you right now?".
We check the relevance of your original goals. I might ask, "As you stand here today, what feels most important to you now?".
3. Designing Forward (Co-Creating the Future)
Finally, we become architects for the next phase. Based on all our reflections, this is where we co-create.
We look ahead: "Looking ahead to the rest of our coaching, what would make this journey a huge success for you?".
We explore, "What new territory or topics feel exciting or necessary for us to explore?".
